Southwest Tennessee Community College is a public community college found in Memphis in the state of Tennessee. The school is operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents. The school is the result of a merger between the Shelby State Community College and the State Technical Institute at Memphis, also known as STIM. The merger was initiated in the 1960’s and was finalized in 2001. Because of the merger, the school has made the credits that were earned at the former schools to be transferable to other colleges.
Southwest Tennessee has several campuses and centers found all over Memphis. Among the campuses includes the Gill Center; located in Frayser, the Macon Cove Campus; found in East Memphis, the Maxine Smith Center; found in Southeast Memphis, the Millington Center; located in Millington, the Union Avenue Campus in Downtown Memphis and the Whitehaven Center found in Whitehaven. Other school locations include two satellite annex campuses found in Fayette County.
Southwest offers its student body several fully accredited programs that award 2 year degrees and certificates. The school also features small classes, quality faculty and open and early admission for students in and out of the community. The school also offers special programs in automotive technology and business studies, allied health sciences, criminal justice, information technologies, engineering technologies. There are also several other non credit course offered all year. Southwest also offers certificates for corporate Training & continuing education with business, industries and individuals.
Southwest has several competitive teams in basketball, baseball, softball, and cheerleading. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have been successful in regional and national tournaments. Both teams play their games at the Verties sails Gym on the Union Campus. The school colors are red and blue and the team nicknames are the Saluqis.
